Reasons for baby-wearing

v      Baby-wearing is convenient.  You can snuggly hold your baby and still have both hands free to chase a toddler, do your housework or have fun!  If you use a sling with a long tail it can be used to cover your baby to block them from wind or sun or from excess stimuli that might bother them.  When not being used your sling can double as a blanket or changing pad.  When nursing, slings provide discreet cover. Walking with your baby in a sling carrier can double as exercise and help soothe baby at the same time.

v      Doctors state that baby-wearing promotes both physical and neurological development.  Mother’s breathing, heartbeat and movement help baby to regulate their physical development and keep baby in tune with mother.  Slings can function as a transition womb as baby learns to control his body and movements.  Preemies who are touched gain weight faster and are healthier.  Strollers do no provide the regulation babies need.

v      Carried babies are happier.  They fuss and cry less than babies that are not carried. Baby-wearing reduces crying and fussiness in infants by 43% during the day and by 51% in the evening and nighttime. (Pediatrics, 1986)  In the US babies’ crying time is measured in hours, in countries that traditionally carry babies crying time is measured in minutes per day.  Baby-wearing is especially useful for High Need or fussy babies.  You can not spoil a newborn baby by carrying them.   Babies are comforted by your heartbeat, smell, breathing and the sound of your voice.

v      Carried babies are smarter.  Crying is exhausting for babies and distracts them from observing and learning about their environment.  Carried babies spend more time in the quiet alert state, which is the optimal state for learning.  Carried babies interact more with their caregivers.

v      Baby-wearing helps to increase bonding.  Baby-wearing can be practiced by parents, grandparents, even foster parents or other caregivers.   Everyone benefits!

v      Holding your baby close you become more in tune with their cues without crying.  Baby-wearing promotes baby/parent communication.  This communication promotes attachment.

v      Baby-wearing promotes emotional security for babies and toddlers which in turn promotes independence.

v      Toddlers like being in the sling because it gives them a safe place out of the way of possible dangers and threatening situations while providing them a better view of the world than a stroller or walking would.  Slings put toddlers up at “ear level” and make it easier for them to be heard.

v      Slings evenly distribute your baby’s or toddler’s weight and are incredibly comfortable.  Different types of slings or holds can be used to distribute your child’s weight depending on your own particular physical needs.  If you have back problems a carrier can be used that will distribute more weight to your waist, for example.

v      Slings are incredibly versatile carriers.  The same sling can be used to carry a 6 pound newborn in a lying, cradle position as well as carry a 35 pound toddler on your back.  It just takes second to get your baby into or out of the sling.  Slings can be used for infants to toddlers and can be used in cradle positions, front facing, back or hip position.

v      Slings are safer than strollers because they keep baby close to and secure.  Slings keep babies away from prying strangers (or family!)

v      Slings are economical, lightweight, portable and versatile.  They can be stored in a diaper bag and can replace strollers, blankets and changing pads.  You can even make your own!

v     It’s FUN to experience the world with your baby close by you!
